George A. Damiano, 93, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, with family by his side.
Interment will be at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, Calif. at a later date.
George was born May 22, 1924, in Riverside, Calif., the seventh of eight children of Italian immigrants, Maria and Antonio Damiano. Eventually, the family settled on a ranch in Perris Valley, Calif., where George graduated high school, lettering in football, basketball and track. George was a combat veteran of WWII, entering the army after graduation and serving as a machine gunner with the 7th Infantry Division, 184th Regiment, in the Battle for Okinawa. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star for his service. George returned home in late 1946 to resume farming. He married his wife, Beverly (Smith), in 1949, and eventually, gave up farming. George worked for the city of Anaheim for the rest of his working career, building and maintaining city parks. He had a great love and knowledge of plants and gardening and could grow just about anything.
After the death of his wife in 1991, George and his two sons, Doug and Randy, moved to Burleson, Texas, to be near his daughter, Jan, and his grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; daughter, Linda; and sons, Douglas and Randy.
Survivors include his daughter, Jan Morrow and husband, David; granddaughter, Gena Wooten, of Burleson, Texas; grandson, Kristopher Wright, of Arlington, Texas; along with five great-grandchildren.
